Why choose All Hands Percussion Curriculum?

Logical Scope, Sequence & Pace – the curriculum was originally designed for a 4-year HS band program with a separate percussion class.  Years of experimentation & adjustments in the curriculum culminated with this final scope, sequence, & pace for All Hands.

Isolated Skill Development – the curriculum isolates skills & concepts by dividing a percussionist’s role into Seven Categories, thus allowing the student to focus & master one thing at a time.

7 Categories of Mastery – 8 Tasks Each:

  • Snare Drum
  • Timpani
  • Mallets
  • Auxiliary
  • Drum Set
  • Hand Drums
  • Self (coordination, responsibility, leadership, etc)

Each category has 8 Tasks, each of which is carefully sequenced & scaffolded.  For example, the second Snare Drum Etude builds on the skills mastered in the first etude, and so on.  This is true for all tasks in all categories. 7 categories multiplied by 8 tasks = 56 tasks for a student to complete in the journey to percussion mastery.

Tips from a Veteran Percussion Educator – each task includes tips for success from the curriculum developer, Don Neptun.  Put simply, each task includes the same tips, advice, & practical solutions that helped turn his students into award-winning percussionists.

Easily Track Growth & Learning – the curriculum includes a chart to monitor growth for each student, helping teachers & students stay organized & on track.

Emphasis on Well-Round Percussionists – the curriculum includes a plan that ensures that student skills & concepts develop in a well-rounded manner.  Students tend to gravitate toward one instrument (i.e. the snare kid or the marimba kid) and that’s okay!  All Hands allows students to learn and grow on their favorite instrument while simultaneously ensuring that they have the mastery to play all of the percussion instruments proficiently!

Flexibility – while the program was designed to work in a percussion class, it can also work in private lessons, small group instruction, or a mixed instrumentation band classroom.  The curriculum provides the material for students to learn & grow in any setting.
